Spotlight on AFH Painting teen Shareka Scott

How has your time at AFH impacted your personal, academic, or social life?

My time at AFH has impacted my personal and social life because when I first came here, I was really quiet and didn’t talk to any of my peers or my mentor. Now I have a close relationship with them and I am able to communicate how I’m feeling. I love my mentor, Mas. I’ve learned how to express myself through my art as well and have become more determined overall.

Do you have any creative pursuits outside of the studio?

I do fashion sketches and illustration. Anytime I’m bored, I just start drawing in my sketchbook. It feels good to be creating something.

Have you always been interested in art and design?

Yes. From when I was little, I was always sketching and drawing in my books. For all of my life, I’ve been drawing and doing art. Sometimes I’d get in trouble for it in class but my parents have always been supportive of my creative expression.

What advice would you offer to a teen who is just starting at AFH?

The advice I would offer is to be creative, be yourself, and enjoy your time here. Use this time wisely. This is a good place to come to, especially if you don’t have anything to do after school. It’s a good way to get off the streets, make art, and just be creative in general.

Each month, we highlight Artists For Humanity’s enterprising teen artists and designers to give you an inside look into their creative process and their unique experience at AFH. AFH’s model reinforces the reciprocal value of pairing working artists and designers (who we call ‘mentors’) with teen artists and designers (who we call ‘youth participants’ or ‘apprentices’) to find creative solutions for client projects. This month, we sit down with Painting Studio participant Shareka Scott.

What has been your favorite painting you’ve worked on?

My Tupac painting has been my favorite. I never thought I could do a portrait like that. I love Tupac and his music so I really wanted to do him justice. I worked on the piece over the summer, taking my time on it, and used a color palette of yellows, browns, and orange in the painting. In the end, it turned out really well.

What are you working on in the Painting Studio right now?

I’m currently working on an abstract piece. I’m using what I’m thinking about and feeling to drive the piece, which is made up of organic shapes in a color palette of purple, blue, red, and little bits of yellow.

Are you planning on going to college and what are you hoping to study?

I plan on attending Arizona State University. I really want to go out of state to learn new things in a different environment. Since I want to go into nursing, I will probably study something health related.
